This antique marionette was made between the years 1880-1890 by puppeteer Josef Allesy.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
The antique Sibyl marionette is made of original materials dating from the end of the 19th century. It is precisely carved from wood and dressed in a beige fabric. Her bluish skin gives her a mysterious touch and her blue eyes look to the future. This marionette will stand out perfectly in the collection of any puppet enthusiast.
Josef Allesy (1810-1894), born Gianpiero Alessi, is of Italian descent. He came to Bohemia around 1830 and worked there as a carver and conservator in churches. His marionettes were extremely anatomically elaborated with very good mobility and in the second half of the 19th century they gained extraordinary popularity with many Czech puppeteers.
Fantastic workshop! The instructor was very patient, kind, and a great listener! We loved making our own puppets!
One of my favorite experiences in Prague was visiting Czech Marionettes and making my own marionette . When I first arrived, Lucie, the shop manager, welcomed me with incredible enthusiasm and passion for puppetry. She even gave me a behind-the-scenes tour of their workshop, showing how these beautiful marionettes are crafted. I was so inspired by what I saw that I decided to take a marionette-making class. I love seeking out experiences that capture the spirit of a city, those “only in” moments that feel truly unique. This was the perfect way to connect me to Prague’s centuries-old puppetry tradition while letting me make something personal and memorable. I’d never worked with fabric before, so I just started cutting and wrapping as best I could. I decided on a traveler character complete with a cloth satchel of trinkets and stories. Lucie was patient and helpful at every step and shared that Czech’s puppetry has a long history of storytelling and artistry, and is deeply tied to the country’s culture and traditions. Afterward, I had a lot of fun taking my puppet around Prague and posing it for playful photos, making the experience feel even more interactive and memorable. I would highly recommend Czech Marionettes to everyone since they clearly continue the legacy of this craft, offering visitors a chance to engage with a unique tradition. The skill of the their artists is amazing. The only challenge now is coming up with the perfect name for my puppet!
